are there still plans to make a new NES dat with "NES 2.0 headers"? Thanks
Hiccup » 2022-04-13 15:29:44

yep
Hiccup » 2022-04-13 15:30:41

i do have other datting stuff to do, however. so it won't necessarily be that soon, unless somebody else does it.

@Hiccup

Thank you for responding. I realized it wouldn't happen anytime soon, but wondered if that was still the plan since I've seen it mentioned awhile ago.

Also, there was something I wanted to bring up since I saw your post about creating new dats for beta/protos.

I don't want this to come off as controversial as I've been following the scene since the days of Goodsets. I feel like No-Intro has taken on more than it can handle unless that is No-Intro end goal to document everything.

No-Intro seems at its best with newer systems, so maybe dropping older systems might help with the workload. Also, the idea of datting proto/betas is adding more work for you folks. Maybe it's best to let HiddenPalace/MAME take the reigns in that regard.

If you have a chance, listen to the podcast from the Video Game History Foundation on their take on betas/protos to help put some prospective on it.

My thoughts are only for the best intentions for everyone involved. Hope to hear back on your thoughts.

Well I mean it probably won't take that long as long as it goes to plan. I'll try and find some time to do it soon.

Yeah there is a bit of a backlog of protos to add. We could use some help, there are only really three active datters for the retro cartridge systems. But we can't just give up - another database isn't going to drop out of the sky to replace No-Intro. Hidden Palace/MAME have different objectives to No-Intro imo - Hidden Palace is mostly about releasing/documenting new protos and MAME is primarily an emulation project, not a ROM cataloguing one. I've listened to that podcast occasionally - which episode do you mean?

Thanks for taking an interest

Regarding their podcast, it was episode 50: Prototypes.

If you take a look at MAME's software dats, you'll see quite a few entries with protos/betas, but I don't know their process.

I do know that smaller groups are documenting for their own interests like VirtualBoy, Coleco and Atari systems, but if this was a perfect world, everyone would just collaborate and help each other.

Again, we all appreciate what No-Intro is doing.

Best!

Thanks, I'll listen to that sometime.

Yeah there are some groups on various sites but they are a bit hard to find and don't always provide that much info. Its not so bad that various groups dump things, but its difficult to integrate it into the database properly when they don't provide much info.

@Hiccup

I just wanted to thank you for doing this so quickly. Quick question, how does the header skip option play a role if someone wants the headered dat?

Thanks!
Hiccup » 2022-04-30 09:28:52

I haven't actually imported the bulk of the headered ROMs yet so don't get too excited, but I'm working on it right now. Not sure about the header skip tag, maybe it'll be disabled by default in the dat download settings, since it won't really be needed anymore.

Sorry! Please no rush. Honestly, please take your time on it.
Much Appreciated

Thank You!
Hiccup » 2022-05-01 13:40:09

I've submitted the data, just need xuom2 to import it.

You are awesome!

If I may make a suggestion. Wouldn't it be better if the dat settings default to headered sets instead? I'm assuming the majority will be scanning using a headered dat.

I found 1 difference between Headered and Headerless dat.

Ultimate Frogger Champion (USA) (Aftermarket) (Unl) shows up as a double rom with the same name and different hash values for Headered. Only shows as single entry for Headerless
Hiccup » 2022-05-05 09:10:35

I'll suggest to xuom2 that headered should be the default. Looks like "Ultimate Frogger Champion (USA) (Aftermarket) (Unl)" is fixed now? Thanks.

Thank you for fixing Ultimate Frogger Champion (USA) (Aftermarket) (Unl)
Anonymous » 2022-05-08 07:42:32

Flea! (World) (Aftermarket) (Unl) is showing as a double with different hashes in the Headered dat. Unheadered looks fine AFAIK.

@Hiccup

Should I open up different tickets whenever I come across anything? Also,did you have a chance talking to xuom2 about making headered the default?

Thank again!
Hiccup » 2022-05-17 19:23:46

Yeah different tickets is best. I think they may become default, but I'm not sure, since they aren't really the "pure" data. Either way, it should be pretty straightforward to select it when you download the dat and its included in the daily dat pack.

Sorry for the slow reply btw.
