Does anyone know why these dumps even differ?

They've got the same languages, same publisher and same version but still the crc differs. Has anyone checked what the difference is or if one of the dumps is bad? I don't suspect that, because the serial differs (X/P) but I'm curious why the publisher changed something for the French release.

There is a nice spam french titlescreen (untranslated for the other included languages) in the french version.

Given serial and included languages it could be argued that current (France) should be (Europe). The fact that a "P" release with same languages exists and given the spam titlescreen on the "X" one, I decided to tag it as (France).

My guess is that the "P" was not released in France at all. This "Télé 7 Jeux" series also shows "Inédits" (unpublished). This series also has "WordJong" which was previously USA-only.

I understand. But since when do we tag roms according their actual release region? I'd be for it (it's hard to document though) but in reality we haven't been doing this. If we did we would have those (UK) instead of (Europe) games. So, with the current system, any P or X ROM should be (Europe), shouldn't it? Iirc there are quite a few German-only releases tagged as (Europe) because they are P and contain an English translation.

We are doing this country retagging since GBA for the Germany games. Initially (Europe) based on serial (P, X, maybe other EUU-linked) and Mx, then retagged as Germany.

This (France) "X" is the same case.

The (United Kingdom) tag will be implemented when I have time to personally check somehow for the Europe and Australia availability of the titles in the revised UK-only candidate list. It would help a lot if those of you having time and knowing the correct sources to check for this gave the list a look. There are less than 20 titles on it.

You say "we are doing this ... since GBA". I must have missed that discussion and decision. The last thing I know is that there was quite strong opposition against the usage of (UK) and release region related tags in general "recently" when you(?) brought up the UK tags...
kazumi213 » 2009-01-26 15:02:00

There has never been a problem with retagging for the proper country when there is evidence enough.

The problems with UK, once again, are:

- NO specific serial, contrary to Germany or France.
- English is default language, English-only DOESN'T mean UK, can be i.e Norway too. I mean all Europe countries other than F, G, S and I, hence using (Europe) is correct.
- Most of the time the UK-available release is also the Australia-available, so using (Europe) is correct.
- NO UK country tag in our DATs so far (iirc).

I just want to be cautious with the (United Kingdom) tag. There are reasons.

I think there is undeniable evidence that UK specific dumps do exist.

As with any of the redumps throughout all of the no-intro dats, it should only be a simple case of altering the region tags as and when (UK) region dumps are found to exist elsewhere. You already have a 'Australia' region tag, so as I've mentioned previously, using (Australia, UK) can't be a problem.

I don't see why there is a delay in implementing this new region tag. Isn't the whole purpose of dat-o-matic so that changes to dats/ROM dump naming can be made 'on the fly' via the database?
kazumi213 » 2009-01-26 21:17:00

And I don't negate the evidence. Otherwise we wouldn't be still discussing about this.

We won't use (UK, Australia) for the same reason we don't use i.e. (France, Italy). Comma separated list in country tag is reserved to main regions: Europe, USA, Japan and under some circunstances Asia too. Europe includes Australia except when the game is Australia-only.

Applying changes with DoM is easy and quick. But resolving for the changes to apply requires time. No rush.

I understand your region reason but your example is not a good comparison to use. Clearly a (France, Italy) tag would be silly because they are both european releases.

The distinction with using (Australia, UK) is that, unless I'm mistaken, Australia may use a UK (english only) release or a USA (english only) release. This is considerably more important to tag in region identification because of the common factor - english.

The only reason I questioned why it's taking so long to implement a (UK) tag is because it seems as though the proposed acceptance of your 20+ (UK) entries is awaiting 'proof' that one or more of those titles has appeared elsewhere in Europe, thus negating the use of (UK).

@kazumi213
Sorry if I appear abrupt with some of my replies, it is not my intention at all. I fully understand the time and effort you must put in with maintaining DS - I found it too time consuming just maintaining a simple database of header information for GBAfront. ;)

I'm sure I speak for everyone by saying that your efforts and all those involved in the up to date dat-o-matic entries are much appreciated!
kazumi213 » 2009-01-27 02:04:00

It's ok Connie. No problem.

We already use (USA, Australia) for this reason. (Europe, Australia) is default. (Europe) includes UK and Australia, so no (Australia, UK).

Well I clearly state that. If they aren't really UK-only I won't tag them so. They are just reasonable UK-only candidates, because I agree with the evidences you previously pointed. But that's different than blindly retagging them without minimal checking.
